This is the original painting behind my limited edition Wild Birds print, and the only one in existence.
A dense, tangled bush of birds of paradise, with flowers bursting in neon orange, pink, lime and violet out of a jungle of layered green leaves. One bloom breaks right out of the frame and spills onto the paper border, and pencil leaf outlines drift off the edges, as if the plant just kept growing.
This one is all about texture. It's painted in heavy-body acrylic, laid on thick so the brushstrokes stand up off the page. Then every leaf vein is scratched back through the wet paint using sgraffito, my signature technique, to reveal the colours underneath. Pencil linework finishes the details. Tilt it in the light and the whole surface ripples, which no print can fully capture.
